Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) supports natural fertilization. Specially-prepared sperm is placed directly inside the woman’s uterus, prior to the release of an egg, to increase the chances of pregnancy. You may know this procedure by its more common name, artificial insemination.
IUI is a suitable treatment option for couples that meet certain criteria, including:
- Women with open fallopian tubes
- Women with low levels of cervical mucus
- Men with normal semen, but low sperm count
How does IUI work?
IUI provides an opportunity for fertilization to occur naturally inside of your body. The process involves tracking the progress of your menstrual cycle. Dr. Garza uses blood tests and ultrasounds to monitor your hormone levels to determine when you will be ovulating.
Once ovulation is confirmed, your male partner will provide a semen sample, which will be prepared in our laboratory. The goal of this process is to collect a sufficient number of healthy sperm. Using a catheter, these sperm are then introduced into your uterus on the day of ovulation.
At Mexico Fertility Center, we administer Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) by injection to mature your eggs. IUI is typically performed within 24-36 hours of receiving the HCG injection.
